Silk comforters are one of the most comfortable things you can have in your bedroom. They are not
just soft and warm but they are also hypoallergenic and very easy to clean. They can be used all year round
especially in moderate climates since they can be warm enough during cold nights and cool enough during warm
nights. Silk comforters were first made in China thousands of years ago and was first used
by royalty. So it’s such a nice feeling to actually use something that was just meant for royalty. Its popularity
can be attributed to its combination of properties including thermal, their light weight, and of course their
hypoallergenic properties.
Mulberry silk comforters are not good environments for bed bugs, dust mites, and are immune to mold
and fungi. Silk comforters are very easy to care for; they only need to be dried in the sun a few times a year
since silk does not retain or absorb odor very well. If you have stains on your silk comforter and want to remove
them or you accidentally spilled something on it, you must have it dry cleaned since silk floss layers are easily
damaged by contact with water.
The silk used in the comforters comes from the cocoons of silk worms. These silk worms feed on mulberry trees found
in subtropical environments. The cocoons are harvested and then boiled which turns the hard cocoon into a ball of
loose, strong, and flexible filament which can measure up to a thousand meters. The ball is usually uncoiled and
spun around a spindle for use in textile for silk cloth.

To make silk comforters, the balls are not uncoiled but instead they are stretched
into a flat jumbled web and are then bundled into layers to make silk floss. The cocoons are expanded outwardly
using a u-shaped rack usually made out of wood. The ball cocoon is transformed into a sheet of jumbled fibers. The
sheet is again stretched on a bigger rack along with other stretched out cocoons to create a thicker, cotton-like
sheet which is now the silk floss I was talking about. Literally hundreds of this silk floss is needed to make a
single silk comforter. When enough silk floss is layered, the silk comforter begins to take form and is again
stretched into the desired dimensions. It can take a hundred up to thousands of layers of the thin floss to make a
single comforter, so depending on the dimensions and thickness of the comforter, it may have thousands of layers of
silk floss. Once the desired stack is achieved, it is then packed inside a silk or cotton fabric to complete the
comforter. The resulting product is very light despite its thickness, which is because silk is very, very
light.
Silk is a breathable fabric, meaning it allows air to pass through making it comfortable in a wide
range of temperatures and also keeps it from becoming smelly with sweat or whatever.

Although silk comforters are more expensive than the common down comforters, the
benefits are really evident so the investment is well worth it. You can buy one online for a little over a hundred
dollars, but you can also find one easily on your local department store for less since there are usually sales in
such stores.
