Zebra Rugs

A zebra rug can compliment a zebra print comforter
extremely well. But there seems to be a lot of confusion about natural and fake rugs. So let’s clear up the
air a bit and get better understanding about zebra rugs.
It is often assumed that all zebras have similar black and white striping on their bodies. In
fact, that is not entirely true. Zebras come from 3 main species. The imperial zebra has around 80 stripes on
its body where as the mountain zebra has about 50. It also wider stripes on the rear of its body. But the
most common zebra is the Burchelli zebra. We often see these zebras running in huge herds on TV in the plains
of Africa. They have only about 25 stripes on their bodies. The Burchelli zebra is most often the victim of
being made in to a rug.
Traditionally we view zebras as being black and white. However, this is not actually reality.
Most zebras have dark brown to lighter colored stripes lining their bodies. The lighter stripes are usually
cream color or off white rather than pure snow white.

It’s pretty hard to come across a real zebra rug
straight from Africa. And if you do come across one, it will cost you a small fortune. Most of the merchants
who sell real zebra rugs grade the quality of them according to discoloring, battle marks, and other
imperfections. Of course, the less perfect zebra rugs will be cheaper.
Natural zebra rugs are usually have a beautiful felt backing that won’t scratch even the finest
of hardwood floors. So adding one to a special room shouldn’t be a problem. But if you are worried about how
pricy these rugs can be, faux or synthetic rugs are definitely the best way to achieve the same
look.
Fake zebra rugs will come in all shapes and sizes as oppose to the natural outline of a real
zebra hide. They are washable and usually feel just like the real thing. Some even have backing that looks
like real zebra hide. Interestingly enough, there are cow hides that resemble zebra hides and have been
altered to have the same striping as zebras.
If you’re tired of the traditional black and white zebra stripes, there are other options in
more wild colors such as pink and purple. These aren’t going to be mistaken for a real zebra rug, but they can really liven up a room.
